Superintendent’s Highlight of the Week: June 9, 2017
Superintendent’s Highlight of the
Mrs. Stitt’s and Mr. Thayer’s third-grade class had the opportunity this week to meet with the Pen Pals they’ve been corresponding with all year. Third graders from Mrs. Oster’s, Mrs. Dorman’s and Mrs. Zehner’s classes at Burr Elementary School in Commack visited Judy Jacobs Parkway for some actual face-time with their pen friends and to enjoy a pizza lunch together while playing a game of Jeopardy.
Throughout the year, the students exchanged letters and eagerly awaited replies, becoming more proficient in the art of letter writing as the year progressed. In addition to becoming fluent letter-writers, the students got to experience first-hand the joy that comes from being on the receiving end of a friendly note. The pizza lunch was the culmination of a year’s worth of correspondence and the students from both schools left the meet and greet with full bellies and new friends.
Lest anyone think that written correspondence has gone by the wayside, here are a few takeaways on the topic of writing as a form of communication: “At sleep away camp I am going to have to write letters to my family. Writing to my pen pals helped make me a better letter writer!” Naomi Schlank.
“I love to write and writing letters makes me a better writer!” Jack Pfeifer.
“Making new friends is great and I really liked getting responses to my questions.” Brandon Sherriff.
