POBMS Celebrates Literacy Week

A group of smiling individuals, both adults and children, are standing together in what appears to be a classroom or educational setting, with colorful decorations and artwork visible in the background.

Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School recently held its annual Literacy Week, which gave students a variety of opportunities to celebrate the power of reading both in and out of the classroom. Throughout the week, students wore themed spirit wear while fifth- and sixth-grade classes participated in scheduled literacy activities in the school library.

Seventh- and eighth-grade student leaders facilitated interactive stations designed to encourage creativity and discussion. The stations, created by members of the school’s book club, focused on identifying key details and connections in texts, analyzing language and structure and strengthening vocabulary skills.

Students also participated in additional literacy activities posted on Google Classroom and enjoyed a school book fair during the week. Student leaders also visited classrooms to read with younger students, helping create a schoolwide celebration of reading.

POBMS welcomed author Sayantani DasGupta, who spoke with students about her book “The Theft of the Ruby Lotus.” During her visit, she discussed the inspiration behind her writing, the history of jewels and the concept of art repatriation before answering students’ questions.

The week concluded with the school’s annual Book Talk event, hosted by Mrs. Comens and Mrs. Rooney. Students, teachers, parents and administrators gathered for a bagel breakfast and participated in activities centered on Ms. DasGupta’s “The Serpent’s Secret.” Working together, participants used their knowledge of the book to solve riddles, complete challenges and discuss how diligence and teamwork could help them “Save Ms. Farrell.”

The POBMS community would like to thank its staff, students and families for helping make Literacy Week a success and encourages continued conversations at home about the importance of reading.
