JJP Students Celebrate Learning About the United States

Students in Ms. Castle and Ms. Massetti’s class at Judy Jacobs Parkway Elementary School spent the school year learning about the 50 states and the people, cultures and traditions that make up the United States.

As part of the elementary social studies curriculum, students explored what it means to be a good citizen, both within their local communities and as members of a global society. Throughout the year, Ms. Castle’s students studied each state’s location, landmarks and unique characteristics while also learning about the diversity of families and cultures represented across the country and within their own classroom community.

The yearlong study culminated in a special celebration on June 17 for family and friends. Students presented a slideshow highlighting their research and performed patriotic songs, including “God Bless America,” “Fifty Nifty United States” and Neil Diamond’s “America.” The selection of “America” recognized the contributions and experiences of families who have immigrated to the United States while celebrating the diverse backgrounds represented in the school community.

Following the performance, family members toured a student-created museum in the library featuring student-authored books about each state, and colorful posters showcasing state facts and landmarks. The event provided students with an opportunity to share their knowledge gained throughout the year.
