H.B. Mattlin Middle School Recognizes Mental Health Awareness Month

Mattlin Middle School recognized Mental Health Awareness Month throughout May with a series of weekly themes, activities and initiatives designed to promote student well-being. Each week included themed morning announcements, resource emails to staff and families, MAP activities and cafeteria-based events.

Week one centered on healthy habits, emphasizing everyday choices that support physical, emotional and mental well-being, including sleep, nutrition, hydration, physical activity and balanced screen time. Students enjoyed the “Recharge Your Battery” activity reflecting on what helps them feel their best and also completed a lunchroom exercise in which they created visual reminders of healthy habits for their lockers.

Week two focused on stress management, where students explored strategies such as deep breathing, positive self-talk, organization, music and taking breaks. They practiced box breathing and participated in “Coping Charades” to act out stress-management techniques.

Week three highlighted an attitude of gratitude, encouraging students to reflect on what they are thankful for and recognize the positive impact gratitude can have on mental well-being.  The month concluded with spirit week and a schoolwide Kahoot review activity reinforcing strategies learned throughout the month.

The District would like to thank the Mattlin Middle School mental health support staff for their work throughout the month: Social Work Intern Dylan Berkowitz; School Counseling Intern Danielle D’Elia; School Social Worker Aviva Sala; and School Psychologists Joelmaia Carrasco, Jessica Macklin and Joseph Morris.
