In our commitment to supporting English language learners, Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District administers two key assessments: the NYSITELL and the NYSESLAT. These exams help us understand each student's English proficiency and ensure they receive the most appropriate level of support.
The NYSITELL (New York State Identification Test for English Language Learners) is given to new students whose primary language is not English. This exam measures their current abilities in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, helping us determine the level of English Language Learner (ELL) support they need. You’ll receive an email with your child’s NYSITELL results within 24 hours of the district receiving the score from NYS.
The NYSESLAT (New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test) is an annual assessment taken each spring by all ENL students (except those at the Commanding level). It evaluates students' progress in English over the past year, covering listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Results for the NYSESLAT are typically released in late August. Within 2 to 3 days of receiving the scores, we send an email update to families with their child’s results. Starting in 2024, the official NYSESLAT Score Report is also available in your child’s "Backpack" on Infinite Campus for easy access.
