The Plainview-Old Bethpage Visual Art program is designed to reach all students and offer them a broad range of experiences and activities. While supporting the New York State Standards for the Arts, art instruction is based on the basic elements of art and principles of design. Students are exposed to creative opportunities in various mediums and areas of self-expression, which are further enriched by art history and the works of accomplished artists. The Visual Arts program is an integral part of the K–12 interdisciplinary curriculum and plays a significant role in community activities as well.

Summer Assignment:
Over the summer, every student will gather at least 30-50 images based on three different sustained investigation ideas. Along with collecting images, students will write a short journal entry discussing their plan for each investigation. See steps below:
Part 1a:
Upload 30-50 images per sustained investigation to our shared folder
The images should be uploaded to our shared Google Drive folder when completed. You may use photos you have taken from previous years, or take time this summer and take new photographs. All images must be original. When photographing or searching for your reference photos, please keep the Elements of Art and Principles of Design in mind. Strong compositions are important and essential to your progress throughout the year.** Creating thumbnail sketches in a sketchbook or an Ipad can be a great vehicle to develop your ideas and own artistic voice. You may also upload thumbnail sketches as well.
Part 1b:
Upload Journal/1 Journal per sustained investigation idea
Creating a journal/visual journal entry is a great way for you to be able to develop your ideas in an organized manner. It’s an opportunity for you to pitch your idea-why are you creating this artwork? What is it that interests you about your subject matter?
In your journal entry, you can discuss your topic, what mediums you plan on using (Graphite brushes on Procreate, Pen techniques with the Wacom Tablet, Color Blocking with the pen tool on Illustrator, etc.) what color schemes you hope to work with, Elements/Principles you hope hope to include, reference other artists for inspiration, or discuss any way you intend to investigate your topic.
Part 2:
Watch the Plagiarism Video and complete Google Form:
This will be posted on Google Classroom for you to complete It is important to ensure that your work is as authentic as possible. As part of the AP 2D rubric: Any work that makes use of (appropriates) photographs, published images, and/or the work of someone else must show substantial and significant development beyond duplication. This is demonstrated through manipulation of the materials, processes, and/or ideas of the source. The student’s individual vision should be clearly evident. It is unethical, constitutes plagiarism, and often violates copyright law simply to copy someone else’s work or imagery (even in another medium) and represent it as one’s own. The College Board reserves the right to decline to score an AP Art and Design Portfolio Exam or cancel an AP Art and Design Portfolio Exam when misconduct occurs, such as copying another artist’s work.

Due September 15, 2025
Summer Assignment:
For the summer, every student will shoot at least 90 digital images based on three different concentrations (30 for each concentration). The images should be uploaded to the GOOGLE DRIVE FOLDER. Using a journal or sketchbook is the perfect vehicle to try a variety of ideas and develop your own artistic voice..
Part 1: Join the Google Classroom- the class code: ofwnmiwk
Part 2: Upload 90 images/30 per Sustained Investigation topic (3 TOTAL). During the summer, before the beginning of school, each student must submit your 90 images- 30 of your best, strongest, favorite images from each investigation idea as well as one journal page to go along with each concentration idea (3 journals in total)*.
Part 3: Upload Journal/1 Journal per Sustained Investigation (3 TOTAL).
Using a journal can help students describe and develop their investigation ideas. Students may also include the mediums they plan on using, color schemes and add some thumbnail sketches of their design work. Students can also include articles and images from artists that they are inspired by. AP Studio art teachers should be able to understand how the student plans on using their reference images to create their artworks. Journals are a great place to document in writing as well as in drawing. The AP College Board requires writing on the exam; “articulate in writing, information about one’s work”. The journal gives an opportunity to express feelings about process, subject matter, philosophical and psychological implications of one’s work.
Part 4: Complete Google form- plagiarism/authenticity
Part 5: Sketch, Sketch, Sketch: You should be sketching all summer long. Drawing from observation is key to help you hone your design skills. While sketching, remember the elements and principles of design, and keep your drawings both conceptually, and visually interesting. Summer sketches will not be graded. It is encouraged that you sketch. You may choose to add some summer sketches to your journal.
● ***This assignment is designed to help you prepare your ideas and develop them into an inquiry topic of interest you can sustain for the year. Imagine yourselves having been granted a "one man show" in a famous art gallery. This gallery wants to know what you are planning to present to the public. They want to know everything about how you think as an artist, what excites you, and how you will prepare yourself for your upcoming shows in 2024-25.
● We are asking you to collect reference material for three different topics. We are also asking you to begin or continue to journal about your work. If your heart is committed to one idea already, the other two ideas are your backups.
● Look at the slide shows on our google class for specific directions to 2D and Drawing AP Studios. The requirements are slightly different for each.
● There is also a guide to some noted galleries where you can see professionals doing exactly as you are doing. Look at their work. Also, look at their artist statements. you will be required to write about your work.
Make sure you understand the difference between Appropriation & Plagiarism
Take a look also at how Arcadia contemporary Gallery presents Julio Reyes' work. It is amazingly similar as to how you will be submitting your portfolios. Seeing your process, your notes, your journal, as part of the test presentation.
The slide presentation has a link for each AP Studio and all information you need to complete the test.
Please make sure to watch the Appropriation video and complete the google form.
All work is due September 16, 2024.
To Summarize:
1. Upload all images from summer. Separate into 3 folders. Upload them to Google drive, it should be placed into the folder that we share. Create one folder Summer Assignment. Due September 15, 2025
2. Upload the journals 1 per investigation idea.
3. Complete the appropriation google form. 4. Begin a journal/diary about your Inquiries. Sketches, thoughts, artists inspirations and mediums can be written down and then explored at a later time.
5. Refer to our Google Classroom, to review the AP College Board websites, and student exemplars.

September 19, 2025
For the summer, every student will shoot at least 300 digital images based on three different investigations (100 for each Investigation). The images may be stored on a memory card or a flash drive to be downloaded in September OR you can upload your photos as you go to the Google Drive folder I have shared with you. This is the perfect time to try a variety of ideas and develop your own artistic voice. Please keep backup copies of all images on either a flash drive, portable hard drive, or your computer at home.
In addition to photographing the 300 images, you must select your best photo from each investigation to write a short artist statement using the Elements and Principles of Art within your statement. The artist statements need to be about three or four sentences that describe your composition, how you took the photo, and what materials (if any) were used. Each statement must have the name of the photograph within it along with the description using terms from your Elements and Principles of Art. We are going to work on this as well in September.
If you do not have access to a digital camera for the summer, you may use your cell phone to take your photos. Please note that you are not choosing your final investigations, just exploring possible options for each. Do not edit it in the camera or your cell phone. You should wait until you see the photographs in Adobe Bridge to decide what works and what doesn't. Even if you think you know what you want your investigation to be, you must shoot the other two possibilities as well. Any investigations not used may be used for your portfolio. When shooting your images pay special attention to composition, background, and lighting.
Keep in mind that not every image has to conform to an investigation. Some images may spark a new idea for an investigation while others might provide an interesting background or detail for a manipulated image, so keep your eyes open to all possibilities!
Please carefully review the AP portfolio requirements uploaded to your Google Classroom. Refer to these guidelines often when planning your photo shoots and evaluating your photographs. Also review the Investigation Area Brainstorm List for ideas.
