Superintendent’s Highlight: October 28, 2016
This election season may be leaving some of us discouraged about leadership, but here in POB schools I am inspired daily by the passionate actions of our students. This week, as I was visiting Pasadena Elementary School, I noticed a box in the lobby that said The Help Committee and inquired as to their activities. I learned that The Help Committee was founded last year by two students, Abigail Goldblatt and Eujin Son who saw a need to start a committee that could help fellow students resolve issues. They realized that students could help each other instead of always relying on an adult. They created the suggestion box and invited students to send in their ideas. The students write The Help Committee with their questions, concerns or suggestions. The Help Committee writes a thoughtful response after bringing the concerns to Mrs. Heitner, their principal, and the letters get delivered to the student’s classroom the next day.
Some of the suggestions they have helped with has been the placement of the friendship bench, where students sit in the cafeteria, decorations in the hallways and even class pets! The Help Committee is a part of what makes Pasadena Elementary School a great place to learn. These students have a great deal to share about how we can work together to affect change. A lesson our election season seemed to not have benefited from. As always, some of my best lessons come from the children!!!
