Superintendent’s Highlight of the Week
June
10, 2016
Meet the future attorneys of the Plainview-Old Bethpage community. I have seen them presenting their cases at the regional tournament and it is no wonder that that the Moot Court Club's Mock Trial Team went on to victoriously capture the 7th and final round of the annual Nassau County Bar Association tournament. Out of 47 public and private high schools in Nassau County, the 13 member team from POB-JFK defeated its final opponent, The Wheatley School, to win the tournament and advance to the state-wide competition in Albany on May 15-17. This year’s case was a suppression hearing, where the students had to argue as Prosecution to justify a police search conducted without a warrant and argue as Defense to protect an individual's Fourth Amendment rights.

At the State Tournament the team competed against teams from each region in the State for a chance to win the NY State title. The students worked tirelessly to prepare for the intense trial and impressed both the presiding judge and the spectators alike. The POBJFK team won their trial as the Defense and claimed 6thplace in New York State. The team is coached by their advisor, Nancy Rogers, assistant advisor Gina Farrell, and attorney-coach Roy Klein.
Watching these students perform in these trials
assures me that they are being prepared for their futures in authentic
ways. I am so proud of the young men and
women we are sending on to bright futures.
This is a stellar example of a POB experience.
