Students Present Research Projects at Stony Brook University
The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District congratulates Sherilyn Gould, Steven Adelson, Zach Loeb, Parsa Erfani and Danielle Scarano for being selected to present their original research projects at the Long Island Regional Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS) Fair. The JSHS is designed to challenge and engage high school students in science, technology, engineering or mathematics. Individual students compete for scholarships and recognition by presenting the results of their original research efforts before a panel of judges and an audience of their peers. Five John F. Kennedy High School (POBJFK) students presented their projects at the fair, more than any other school on Long Island.
Following a morning of presentations, both Parsa Erfani and Danielle Scarano were judged best in their category and named regional finalists. Erfani worked at the Rockefeller University for two summers with Dr. Leann Huang on a project testing the efficacy of using cytokine IL 27 in the treatment of psoriasis and eczema. Scarano worked at Stony Brook University with Dr. Nancy Hollingsworth and determined that a specific protein, HOP 1, plays a key role in meiosis.
After a second round of judging, Scarano was named a top five national finalist and will present her project at the National Competition in Bethesda, Maryland in May.
